Land is increasingly encountering problems which cause soil degradation. Erosion, desiccation and salinisation are just a few examples. The result is that fertile top layers of the soil disappear, water infiltration deteriorates and surface discharge accelerates. This constant decline in soil fertility and productivity value, along with cultural and recreational value has many negative effects, particularly for vulnerable ecosystems, which often have a flow on effect on other systems (think of food riots).

This ‘Prezi’ (an online presentation) is an interactive way of finding basic but essential information about degradation. It covers several causes of degradation, and ways to measure the amount of degradation.
